Transporting Shrimp Long Distance

Hi guys,

I just wanted to know whether anyone thinks i can transport some shrimp; in a 1.5l coke bottle, for an 8-10hour journey? Of course, i will get oxygen from the LFS etc. I kinda thought that if they can send stuff from indo-pac to the states (at least 14hrs) then i've got a chance with 10 hours.

The reasons for this being: I'm in canberra, australia now. Shrimp here cost a lot (i dunno why lysmata amboinesis goes for $199ea) and i cant get a good variety. I'm heading back to Singapore/Malaysia in a week or so and was thinking of getting either thor amboinesis, anemone shrimp or harlequin shrimp there. (All of these are unheard of in canberra).

Please note that if i do get a harlequin pair, i would feed them with as much red/orange/blue starfish as they want. I'm really hoping to get the sexys though.

As a side note, i've personally brought in bright purple acropora from mauritus to Singapore (9hrs). But i dunno if shrimp are more sensitive in shipping.

Anyone got any advice on long distance shipping?

I would think it would be okay but it does have risks.

Just curious - did you collect the acros in Mauritus yourself?

I was there for a week about 3 years ago. Awesome diving and snorkeling. I love it there.

Thanks for the input guys,

How long do ya think the shrimp could last anyway? I guess i could do a water change on the flight, if necessary.

Djconn, i think the maldives are better; especially for snorkeling. Yeah, i collected them myself. When i went to the maldives, i got a tiny 2" almost neon pink ritteri anemone with light blue tips. The interesting thing was the anemone tips glowed in the dark for about 4-5 hours after lights out; no kidding! It did move around a lot though and i gave it away when i moved to uni. I'll try to find some pics of it; really fantastic one of a kind.

As long as you get the bottle filled with oxygen it should be fine. Water changes should be unnecessary.
