Tank Mates - Fighting

Okay. Problems here. My six-line has recently become very territorial with my smaller clown. He has caused the clown to unhost the powerhead (in my estimation) and the clown is resigned to a small corner. I just watch my six-line charge and poke the clown in the side. They're both in my 24g nano. Any advice on how to get these two to get along or is one or the other got to go?

The six-line needs to go to a larger tank IMO, then he will not be so territorial due to added real estate. If you leave them together the clown may not survive.

Hi Roodee,

I had the same problem with a six line and a maroon clown (I have a 30G). I pulled the six line out and put him into a QT tank for a day moved the rock around and then add him back in that seem to work. He still nipped at him onece and a while at meal time but not like before that. I edded up getting rid of the fish and sold to a friend with a 130G and I heard he is loving his new home.

Try pulling him out for a day or so and move the rock around it might work.

Just like skimp say they required a big tank but people seems to insist to having one in a small tank but is your choice clown or sixline but ill keep the clown is less trouble and more hardy than sixline....

Well, that sucks. I read that a 24 gallon was okay for the six-line. I really like him over the clown, but I imagine that will limit other tank mates..he (the six-line) eats and forages and seems to not be stressed by the size...ahh..decisions, decisions..thanks guys.

yeah sometimes they are ok in a 24g but not with other tank mates... but here is what Dr. forster say:

It requires a 30 gallon or larger aquarium with a generous supply of hiding places and live rock in which to forage for food. It may act aggressively towards peaceful Wrasses and other fish that are easily intimidated.

but is your decision him and no more fish (well another thing will be a fish bigger than wrassel but not recomended cause of tank size) or clown and more posibilities to have more variety of fish in your tank.

Im surprised that the six-line picked on that maroon clown....maroons are usually agressive and territorial...

Roodee, if it makes your decision any easier, the clown will be happier in the 24 gallon than the wrasse will be. And with the clown you will be able to keep other fish as you stated.

I vote for removal of the sixline..."you're fired!!"

What are your recommendations for a fish similar (in personality and style) to the six-line that would fit in the 24 gallon?

Whatever you do I recomend that you do not choose a dottyback or pseudochromis. Even though they are similar to the six line wrasse, they also show the same kind of agression although they grow to 3". "They can be remarkably pugnacious for their size" You could try a royal gramma, even though I read it's profile on live aquaria which states that it is agressive with it's own species and should be housed singily. Yes it should be housed with NO OTHER BASSLETS or PSEUDOCHROMIS, however I think it could be housed with other fish for it is shy. Actually this could be a problem because most of the reviews I read said that it was getting beat up by other fish!

You can find a goby for any part of the tank. Watchman and sifting gobies are usually found on the bottom. Clown gobies are usually perching on the rockwork and firefish and court jester gobies can be found anywhere from top to bottom but usually near the mid to upper parts of the tank.

Roodee,

You need a third tank mate that will difuse the fighting. Believe me, when ever the third tank mate arrives the fighting can stop.

My six line was a menace in my 12 gallon, would chase nemo here and there and bother him.

I then fell in love with the orchid dottyback from the red sea and brought him home. The sixline went crazy trying to size him up and they were more interested in each other than the clown.

Since both were of equal size they evenly matched each other and no one become the boss.

Today they live in 72 gallon reef and still confront each other, occasionally but back in the 12 gallon, it was the crevices in the live rock that helped break up the fighting.

When the six has someone to contend with, he will lose focus on the other...

This has been my experience in the past,,, on many tanks....
