Well I still have a week or so until my tank gets here so I orfred the other things I need. A koralia 1 Powerhead a Visitherm 100w heater for the tank a Visitherm 75w heater for water changes a instant ocean hydrometer a red sea reef master test kit s coralife digital themometer and a mag float algae deal. Is there anthing I missed? LFS has the salt LS LR and RO water for the day the tank arrives. I wa thinking of changing out the stock pump for a maxijet 1200 and possibly using the stock pump to stir salt for water change bucket. Anyone try this? I can't wait to get started.

I find the floating hydrometer easier to us than the Instant Ocean and more accurate. Try the instant ocean but if it doesn't work for you the floating kind might help.

For best results you should get a refractometer. They are not too much $$$ and will give you very accurate readings. Make sure you get calibrating solution as well.

Also, if you have not ordered already, you really should get API testing kits. Easier to use and more accurate.

The Refractometer is definitely the cats meow and something to shoot for in the near future if you dont have enough fun dollars to spring for one now, in the mean time the IO hygrometer will get you close enough for government work as they say. Its not that accurate but if they are rinsed off before and after use to keep salt from building up on them which is the biggest reason for gross inaccurate measurements, then they will get you in the ball park so that you can keep the SG at satisfactory levels.

I agree that I would very much prefer the API test sets over RedSea. If the Maxi-jet 1200 will fit I would seriously consider it and as you said use the cheesey one that it replaces to mix your salt water up with.
