okay i started working on this and was wondering what every one thinks. I made it out of a 10 gallon tank. Should be enough filter for my 20L. any thoughts

I'm assuming that it's just due to this being a rough draft drawing, and things not being to scale, but the dividers on either side of the LR area seem low to me. You might want to make the overflow return area a bit wider to accomodate a filter sock over the plumbing as well.

Otherwise it looks great.

the pieces next to the LR area are 5 inches tall. which is half the size of the tank. im going to use a HOB skimmer. would a external pump work if i pipe the intake to the pump over the edge of the tank?

So you only want the water to be 5" high over the LR? That seems shallow to me.

You can use an external pump like that if you Have a T at the top as the plumbing comes over the side so that you can prime the pump.

how tall should they be? the tank is about 10" tall. i want enough room for back flow if the power goes out.

You're back flow should be controlled with siphon break holes, so you'd only get a small amount of water draining back into the fuge. Most of the ones I've seen are at least 3/4 of the height of the tank. I'd ask Niko5 over on MARSH, he's built a ton of them. He may have even converted a 10g tank before.
