Substrate

I am carefully planning the set up of a JBJ 12 gallon Nano Cube.
I want to take it slowly and address each step at a time.

Having decided on the tank I now have to decide on the substrate.
I have discounted a plenum as it doesn't seem to offer much advantage.
I am thinking of a deep bed of a mixture of live sand and crushed coral (or similar). The minimum seems to be 3 "??
Keeping this in mind I think that I will need about 25 lbs of each (live sand and crushed coral).

Does this seem about right?

BTW anyone who has a similar tank - how much clearance do you need at the back?

Thanks for any input.

As for substrate, unfortunately a deep sand bed is not frequently used when setting up nano tanks, so a 2â€

Hi Didger,

IMO, I would stay away from crushed coral. It can contain Phosphate. I had it in my FOWLR tank when I fist started and had to pull it out it was not a fun job.

YEAH aragonite LS will work better at it contains some good stuff for your cycle period.....and dont use bioball, ceramic rings or bag or carbor .... replace them with rubble of live rock and to raplace the carbon use chemi pure a kind of carbon that will leave your water crystal clean and is alot better than normal carbo.... just my suggestion

I am gonna have to look into that chemi pure myself. I am using the carbon in my 12g and my water does have a dingy look..irritates me. I just haven't asked about that yet. Thanks for the info ED

Careful with the crushed coral, detrious can settle down in the crackes and crevises and can cause continuous nitrate problems.

It was my pleasure to help and even better 2 at the same time :) .... and yes the chemi clean really works great for clearing your water you will notice the diferrence over time if not instantly and if have a nano cube a surface skimmer works for the film of oil in the top.......

Many thanks to all..

Great info guys thanks a lot....

What I got was:
Not deep - 2" or less (all LS in this case)
CaribSea Aragalive Fiji Pink is best..
Use Chemi Pure carbon
Use LR rubble in the filter

I'm sure that you all saved me a lot of learning troubles....
