strange new growths

can anyone help me to id these ....they have appeared over 2 days in my brother's tank (he hasn't added any livestock for over a month)....they are proud of the rock, but flat topped, are almost black, and look fuzzy on the top

any ideas?

Advice on this one is to bring in 3 to 4 small to medium sized cleaning crew crabs. Two small snails would also be smart. End result would be better live rock with only coraline growth....

Try it out and you'll see the difference in about 1 week, you will thank me latter. Anything that stays on the rock after that is considered good and makes it easier to spot growth that could be bad....

Yes, I agree. Just looks like normal algae growth in a tank with not much flow and no clean up crew. I suggest what Mike said earlier.
