A lot of this depends on what you want to keep in it.

If you want to keep corals then you need to look at the different types available and decide which types you prefer.

SPS- Small Polyp Stony corals - Require high light.
LPS- Large Polyp Stony corals - Require moderate light.
These are also called hard corals because of their hard skeletons.

Softies, Mushrooms, Zoos, polyps- Requre moderate to low light.
Anemones- Require high light and a mature tank.
Clams- Require high light and a mature tank.
Fish- Really don't care about lighting, and will do ok in high, moderat, low, or no lighting.

Your filtration and water flow is also somewhat determined by what types of corals you want to keep. SPS generally requires very high filtration with a lot of flow. They thrive in a nutrient poor environment. LPS on the other hand generally like a bit more nutrients in the water, and less flow, as the longer polpys will get torn in a high-flow area.

Hit some sites and some fish stores and figure out what types you like then we'll be able to help with some suggestions.

Id do an oceanic cube with a 250 or 400 watt metal halide pendant. You can keep whatever your heart desires (or your wallet will allow). :)

Oooh. Another cube owner. How do you like that 14k bulb? I am thinking of upgrading my light from 250 to 400 so I can do a 20k without loss of par. What do you think?

10k is a bit too yellow for me these days and the 20k I am running now is too dim.

Love the bulb. I used a Coralvue bulb last year and when it was time ot replace the bulb I went with the Phoenix. Great white/blue balance. What brand of 20K are you running?

Sorry for the hijack citizen.

Can you guys move this thread to the beginners section? TY!

Im using both Ushio 10 and 20k bulbs. The 10 is much brighter and I get more par and coverage. The 20k is nice, but its way too dim.
