Staghorn hermit...

Has anyone kept a staghorn hermit before? Just curious about these guys. They look pretty cool, but I read that their shell takes special care. Any success with these guys?

as far as I know dragon79 has one or did at one point :)
you are right and he's alive and kicking :) They look absolutely awesome in their staghorn shell, but alas, since it's not really known what keeps a staghorn shell alive, when the shell dies, the hermit outgrows the shell, and when that happens, they'll jump into the next best shell to upgrade.

Dont be too discouraged when that happens, cuz the staghorn hermit itself looks tripply looking. white with red eyes.

While researching them a little bit, I visited liveaquaria.com and they noted that there are hydroids and bryozoans on their shells that require proper feeding. Is that possible in a small nanotank? Doesnt that require a larger system? And then it notes that the shell shouldnt come in contact with stinging corals and anemones. How is that possible in a reef system?

Dragon, do you have any problems with aggression towards other snails/hermits with this species?

Just curious before i go spend $15-$20 on a hermit!!

staghorn is calm and lazy. He really is a stayput hermit. He always stis in the front of my tank where I can always see him. As far as the "proper feeding" did you find what that may be? In my tank, when he had a shell that was still living, it has nothing that could sting it. Since then though, after he ditched it, I picked up a small frag of frogspawn, a orange fungi plate.

Well I dont know if I jinxed myself or anything, but last night my staghorn was moving all over the place, after eating. This morning I found his shell in the front, and saw his remains of perhaps a molt. I think he may be shell less. (he's done that before when he was younger) But now he has more things that could tear him up easily. My female black clown is one opportunistic killer. Then after that I am sure the others would join in and kill him. I'll have to observe tonight to see if he's still around and if not, the guy is finally gone :(
