The sponge filters in Nanos (little black blocks, I have three) are to be cleaned monthly by manufacture specs. This just involves taking them out and clean in VO water. Now I talked to someone who says he keeps the rinse water and pours it back into the tank. He says I'm getting rid of important bacteria etc. Well, that water looks darn gross. What should be done here??? What is everyone doing???

I rinse them weekly (at least) in plain RO water. What they are referring to would be if they were being used for your bacterial filter which is taken care of by your LR in a reeftank. I have removed all but one of my filter blocks and rinse it weekly discarding the rinse water. If you don't rinse pretty often the sponges will become nitrate factories. HTH, Skip
