Scallops?

Ok, so I went to by a thing of shrooms and Zoos as the first corals in my tank, I got to the LFS and sawa Rock with Neon Green zoo's and Purple zoos, but as an added bonus they were growing on Scallop shells (I was told they were JUST shells) and it had some green striped shrooms. I fell in love with the rock and had to have it with all of the coral on it. So I was moving a rock with the tongs that I have and brushed up on the scallop and it closed!!! NOT DEAD!!! Now, do they require more care or anything that a stock AP12 can not provide??? What do they eat?

Does it have red hair like stuff coming out of it? If it does it's probably a flame scallop, either way I would treat it like any other bivalve and target feed it micro plankton once in awhile. HTH.

no, not a flame scallop, From what I hear though they can nuke the whole tank if they die, it's like a darker green/brown color.

could be scallop, could be oyster, or any number of common bivalves that often come on live rock - in general no worries - i wouldn't bother target feeding it, there should be plenty of plankton and every time you scrape the glass it will get feed, and if it doesn't make it - common with these unexpected bivalves - it won't "nuke" your whole tank if it is properly cycled. I had a scallop similar to the one your describing on my rock that lived for years without any attention and then i inadvertenly broke it lose rearanging some rock one day and it died :( BTW it grew almost 4 inches before this happened.

Well good to know it isn't harmful, or that it will require a ton of attention that I am not ready to give it. Hopefully I can provide it a peaceful life! I did see today though after I scraped the glass it opened a little wider as if feeding. I like what it adds to my tank too.

I'll get one up soon, I just keep forgetting to go over to the parental units place to get my camera back from them. But that's where I'm going once I get out of work today.
