yep = tank is still cycling - probably just diatoms - they will dimish as the tank ages

I hate looking at this thread.

Usually diatoms will disappear after the cyle has finished, and water quality is improved.

Okay, I thought the diatoms sink into the sand. Since the crud down there seems to look the same as diatoms...unless they are the same. Are they?

looks like you need a better clean up crew.....my sand kind of gets like that then i go to bed and presto gone in the morning...

I don't think so. Diatoms require light.
the crud you're seeing lower in the sandbed is algae. Although I suppose it's possible that some of the bacteria cultures in the sandbed might be visible as well once they're established enough. But I honestly don't have any real clue if they are or not.
