Salt level

Hi Guys,

I just got a fancy new refractometer. My tank is set to 1.0234. I was thinking of bringing it down to 1.0230 what is the best level for a reef tank?

Thanks,

Eric

A little higher (1.026-1.027) for corals or for fish only you can drop it lower to about 1.018 or above.

Thanks Skip,

The Beansch Marine atlas says it should be 1.022 - 1.025 at 25C. Is this wrong. The books is kind of old. I am going to have just (CB) seahores in this tank, But I might have a coral or two.

How about at 26.5 that is the temp of my tank? I have it at 1.023 right now.

How does the temp work with salt levels? How about lower temp tanks like 18C?

Thanks,

Eric

The temperature the book is referring to is for older models of refractometers, if you check yours you'll probably find that it is an automatic temp compensating model. You used to have to either check the salinity at a specific temp or use a formula to convert the readings for the temp of your tank. You will be fine at 1.023 for your seahorses.
