i was given the sale/show booth display tank from the red sea people at the LA frag swap so i set it up at school and moved everything from the 35 hex into it:

its got all the problems of other plug and play units but a really nice footprint and the lights, cooling, and flow are a bit better. the skimmer has yet to skim anything and the overflow/filtration is going to need some tweeking, but in general for someone who is new into reefing and just wanted a quick easy set-up they are a nice unit. it has its own timer and power station so all you do is fill it with water and plug one cord in the wall - doesn't get much easier then that 
it is a great system for me to use at school cause the set-up is so easy
i believe however that more advanced reefers with specific goals in mind would be better off building their own system of course.
