Hi Everyone,
You may already know this, but if you don't, I'm a NANO ROOKIE and need help.

So far I have a Nano 12g and some sand/gravel.

I plan on have a shrimp, hermit crab and a few fish (2-3) in the tank.

I'm looking for advice on setting up this new tank - keep in mind I don't know all the tech-E- terms. Any help would be great.

Thanks a bunch!

ok well how old is the tank? and what kind of sand/gravel is it? If I were you I would put in a bit of Live Rock and let the tank cycle (it will take about a month or so...fyi). While that is going on I'd just read up and use the search tool here on this web site and asks questions. Hope this is a good start for you!

I'd advise against the gravel and stick with the sand, the gravel will only trap waste and cause problems down the road.

Yes, you'll need a heater... a 50 watter should do. I personally use and like the Stealth heater. It is plastic, not glass.

As far as the gravel thing goes, ditch it like Jennie said. It is not a good idea to have that under the sand. Also, with time the larger gravel will work it's way up and eventually become the top layer.

Thanks for your MSGs Jesse and Jennie.

I'm thinking of having a hermit crab and shrimp in my tank.
Wouldn't that be something good for them?

okay... I'm returning the Gravel and sticking to Sand only :)

What would be the difference between a plastic or glass heater?

There are many different kinds of heaters out there, you should read up on the varias kinds to give you an idea of what will work best for you in your setup. Basic defference between the plastic and glass heaters is that one breaks easier
