My little .75 gal Aqua Vase is still doing great, so I thought I'd post the results of an experiment I tried. I was getting pretty tired of cleaning up slime algae, so I thought I'd try the Tim Allen approach to filtration: "More Power". I picked up a Penguin 100, (smallest hang on I found with a Bio-Wheel) and put it on and it has made a huge difference.
There are few things to keep in mind with this filter.
1) The intake pipe is too long, you'll have to cut it. I cut it as long as I could and stuffed the intake screen inside the tube, (pointy end up).
2) This is like running an outboard motor in a bathtub. You will want to stuff something into the intake pipe to reduce the flow. If you reduce it too much you won't get enough flow to turn the bio-wheel so you'll have to make some adjustments.
3) This filter will back flow a lot when turned off or if the power goes out. Try turning off the filter to see how far the water rises just so you're comfortable when it happens. I fill mine to just about the bottom of the clamp for the stock light. (see pic)
Here are some shots with the new filter, one with some stuff to show the size of the tank.
