questions regarding adding new LR to tank

Hello

We were wondering is it OK to add additional LR to our tank at anytime? When we purhased our set-up our LFS had done all the cycling and adding of the sand, rock, then crab snail and shrimp etc. Now I have had the tank for almost 2 months and we want to add more LR.

Is this OK, also do I need to isolate the LR first away from my tank even if the LFS claims the rock is "curred"?

I also have had an outbreak of ich which killed 2 of my fish. There were 3 which I now hear is too much of a 12g nanocube. The fish died 1 week ago. Their was one survivor and he seems to be holding on. Should I wait several weeks before adding the LR because of the ich?

thanks!

i dont think that you should wait to add the LR because of the ick...i do suggest that you store the new LR in a bucket with some sort of filter on it to allow the rock to finish curing, even if it is cured when you buy it. give it a week in the bucket then add it to the tank.

Put the new LR in a bucket with a powerhead and heater, wait a week like Reefman said, and you should be able to add it in.

It takes a minimum of 4 weeks with a fishless tank for all of the ich parasties and eggs to die off. Putting a fish back in the tank before then is pretty risky. Most people wait 6 weeks just to be sure all of the parasties have died.

I'd have to agree with Jennie about the LR. I never add rock, even if it's supposedly "cured" into any of my tanks until it's been sitting in a bucket with a power head and heater for at least a month, with a water change or two done during that time for good measure. Water is tested to be srue all reading are zereo before I place it in my tank. I've got way to much invested in these tanks to risk killing off livestock because the rock was supposedly cured. JMO of course.

Thanks for the info; it really helps when the get the info from the experts....so I should get a bucket with tank water, a heater, a powerhead and possibly a filter.

I'm sorry I don't understand which kind of filter to put in the bucket and not sure what you mean by powerhead?

I'm sorry for the dumb newbie questions but I want to do more GOOD than damage.

Thanks
Mindy

A powerhead is a small pump that is designed to be put in your tank to provide more water circulation, here is one as an example: http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_pow ... sp?CartId= . You don'r really need a filter but one can be substituted for the powerhead if you had one laying around, here is an example of the type of filter most people hang on the side of the bucket: http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_fil ... sp?CartId= . If you had a canister filter you could also use it, another example: http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_fil ... sp?CartId= . If you look at the top of the filter you can see where the 2 hoses connect, one is for an intake and the other is a discharge back to the aquarium.
