hey,
you've done a great job with this site, i was just curious... do you use software to run it? if so which software? I've always wondered how these forums are run.

Ha, these things are sort of a pain-in-the-ass to setup. at the very bottom of every page you'll see the last line is about phpbb. It's a hyperlink to the companies website. this version of phpbb is free. I set my forum up for shits and grins and then the DJ asked me how it worked. I walked him through the process. The hardest part is figuring out how the server is configured. I spent days working with it b/c I didn't know what I was doing but once you figure it out it's pretty easy. I made DJConn use the same hosting company just b/c I knew how to set it up already.

Now he's up and running with this and probably knows a helluva lot more about the actual software than I do. Then only thing I've never done with mine is back it up b/c it gets so little use. So DJ, you backed this puppy up yet? Let me know how that works, after getting hacked early on you'll realize that crap does happen and it'd be a shame to lose all the info already gathered here.

Yeah, its powered by freeware called phpbb. This is the newest version I believe. I think there is a link on the bottom of every page. As Phishy said, its a pain at first. But once you get things rolling and figure out how it all works, its pretty hassle free....unless you get HACKED!

So yes, I'm backing up everyday now.

There are three parts to any webpage:

1. Hosting service to upload what you *see*
2. Domain name
3. software to create webpages

First you buy your domain name and register it, usually for 3 or so years at a time, many options. This insures no one else uses your domain name.

Then you *rent* server space to upload your webpages to. When you click a link it references that server and pulls your pages up to view. You can run your own server but it is expensive and requires a high speed line (usually greater than a cable modem) to handle traffic loads.

Then you have software to create webpages on your home PC before uploading them to the net for others to see.
