Powder Blue meets his cousins...

Yes that's right, I took the plunge today and gave in when my LFS told me complete your tank with 6 different species of Tangs...

I now have the Tomini Tang, Cheveron Tang, Kole Tang, Blue Tang, Yellow Tang, and Mr Powder Blue Tang.

He's my favorite, as he appears to be the most graceful of the tank; he's also the largest so no one said anything when he came to the family.

These are semi-large videos so be patient !!! It is worth the wait....

Mike,

Whatever you are doing to your tank, you're doing it right. Your reef looks awesome, with crystal clear water, super cleaned SB, outstanding rock formation, with beautiful corals, fish and inverts. A truly work of art!

Good luck with the new tang man... By far one of the most gorgeous marine fish species in my opinion. Thanks for sharing. These videos are stunning. ;-)

Mike,

It takes some guts to post this thread on "that other site". It was a sure shot for a flaming. Oh well, you handle yourself well. IMO, it does seem like alot of tang, but I think with your diligence and observational abilities (if that makes sense), everything will be okay.

I dont know much about tangs...are all the species you have herbivorous grazers? How do you feed them? Just curious.

Jesse,

You are right, I took a beating over at nano-reef, but you see I also have fans and they came to my rescue...

Back in early days when I first got started I took some real beatings but thankfully I had a powerful allie, Incysor would appear and defend us...

I've learned a lot since and I'm still learning tons in this wonderful hobby...

Sadie, Nemo, Aromano and Jesse, thanks for your support without you guys reefing would only be half as fun... :D

That is one of the main reasons I like this board, you don't have to take a beating because you don't follow the rest of the crowd. Plus due to its size it has more of a family feel here.

Nobody has seen (well, read) a beating until you visit Mike's thread on reefcentral.com about the Crocea that he had in his HIGHLY upgraded nano cube...I think it was the "MikeGuerrero" nanocustoms edition. OMG...the comments made on that thread were insane!! Oh well...shouldnt bring up the past, but, yes, you have your supporters...many of us are in that support group. Without someone pushing the envelope, we would still be stuck with dull colored mushrooms and zoas under standard fluorescent lighting...no VHO, no MH, no SPS's, clams, etc. Those are all things that were seen as "pushing the envelope" at some point.

Anyways...

P.S
Jesse my crocea today sits on his throne in my 72 gallon, but I kept him and another crocea clam about 1 year before I upgraded.

Go figure that when both clams entered my new larger tank the large one lived and the smaller one died...

Just lifes many mysteries....

oohh i forgot hey mike talking about clams what are the signs when i clam is not doing well and how can you tell and also if you put one in a tank not sutable for it for how long will live?????.... also other stupid question why they need alot of light if in the wild the are deep deep in the ocean. or they get enough even being so deep......???? just stupid question...

I am no clam expert, but surefire signs are a mantle that isnt fully extended and that is losing its color. Most of the clams we keep in our reef are from the shallows...not deeper than ~20 feet i think.

Actually, until clams reach ~3" in length, they cannot support themselves on light alone (not enough zooxanthellae in their tissue), so also rely on feedings.

Yeah,

Jesse answered your questions pretty good Ed. I was able to keep a Crocea clam in my 12 gallon cube because I had upgraded the lights and I stayed on top of water quality.

The clam I got was a nice size not too small not too big about 4 inches I believe. In the beginning it's mantle wasn't fully extended and as I upgraded my lights higher, the mantle extended nicely.

It took time for the clam to fully adjust to PC lighting because at the LFS they were under MH.

Then when I got the 72 gallon, the Clam had to re-adjust again.

I didn't do a lot of feeding phyto just the minimal but gave him plenty of light. My smaller clam died in the end he was about 1 inch smaller than my larger one and just never really blossomed like his brother.

You can tell how healthy they are because they are extremely colorful and very well extended and if you eclipse their light, they will retract.

Mike...
