Pic of the week --- Starfish

Let's see the starfish you've got, any will do whether it's a brightly colored linkia, or tiny white mini-serpent stars. Try to keep the images to 600x450 or under so that the dialup folks can enjoy them too.

Here's my most recent pic of starfish. I'll have to go digging for others.

Stefanie just loves the one that we have in our tank, but we only have one of those little stars and we never see it except for every once in a while.

LOL....We were so excited the first time we saw one of those little ones crawling around the glass. It was one of the rare one's that all the arms are nearly the same size. A few days later we of course saw another one that had less arms, and one was quite a bit shorter than the others and my wife was upset because we thought something had attacked the original one and eaten off some of it's arms. It took awhile before we figured out that we had several in the tank, and that they were normally kinda mutant looking. Live and learn. :smile:

Here are a few of my star before he got too big and ate two of my fish! I had him for about a year and he grew to be about 14" from tip to tip. Traded him in for store credit soon after.

Thanks...I'm actually not happy with any of those shots. The orange one's pattern has managed to throw off my camera's focusing ability on pretty much 95-98% of the shots I've taken of it. The sand sifter shots would have been cool, except the glass was dirty, so there's a bunch of algea spots blurring the pic. Unfortunately those're the only starfish shots I've got of ones from my tanks. Well, unless you want to count the ones with the harlequin shrimp eating them. LOL

That picture rocks. I kept trying to find one of the mini stars in my tank to get a picture of, but short of digging around under rocks I couldn't seem to find any. Of course pulling rocks meant my hands were wet, and I by the time I'd get my hands dried off, and try to get the sucker in focus it would have scooted under something else again, or gotten back onto the sand, so that it blended in well enough that you couldn't really tell what I was taking a picture of. :lol:

Here is another picture of a mini, not sure what species. As far as I know, this is the only white one I have. I was pulling some macro from my main tank to put into the fuge, and almost missed it. Good thing I went back to double check the bowl.

Great pics Jennie. You seem to really have a nice variety of stars in your tank :D.

SM - no, I bought the star for $8 and they gave me $5 store credit when I took him back 2 yrs later. Oh well, just glad to have that demon out of my tank!

I caught these pictures awhile back, there's about a 15 minute between these shots. The star was fine afterwards, so my only guess would be that it was 'splitting'.

You still don't have those starfish jennie, do you? If you do, you need to get rid of them. They will multiply quickly as you can see in your photos. They are also known to eat corals of various types.

Asterinas are not known to eat corals. There are a few hobbyists that think that they were eating their coral, but none of the ones that I've read about were conclusive in any way. It was just as likely that the coral was dying from something else and the asterinas were simply cleaning up the dying tissue.
