Im about to get a used pc fixture that is 2x55 watt bulbs. the ballast are external and not built into the fixture. Could i gut the fixture keeping the endcaps and splice each section (two bulbs with two switches) into two more (giving me 4 lamps now) and run 4 24 watt pcs? Im wanting to use this as actinics only along with my vhos.

I think that depends on the ballast, if its an electronic ballast then I think it would work the way you describe. Why do you want to run 4 24 watt bulbs? Since you mentioned that they would be run along side of VHOs that says that the tank is at least 24 inches and standard 55 watt PCs are 21 inches. I think in the long run the 2 55 watters would be more cost effective by having to only replace 2 bulbs instead of 4, you would also be getting 110 watts as opposed to 96 watts.

well i already have 300 watts of vho over my 20L (12" tall) Im just wanting some extra actinics to make the coral colors show. If i go with 4 24watts i can put one in the front middle and the back, also i can add one to both ends.
