Not rookie to saltwater but rookie to NANO few questions

Howdy guys from Texas,

I used to have a 55 SW tank pretty basic stuff LR, LS, and fish. No corals to speak of. I learned alot of mistakes the hardway and i have been really interested in Nano from the word go. I saw some of the DIY builds and I think I want to go that route but this is my question. I will list the size of tank I want to get up and running and items I think I am gonna need and if you could go over it and fill any voids or fix any overkill. Oh by the way I want to have corals, cleaner crew, mabey a small fish

10g tank
2 powerheads around 340 gph
a hanging filter on the back (no idea what to get)
around 7lbs of LR (leaving some room for frags)
bout 3/4 inch of LS

ok lights (please direct me here I want to have the type of corals that sort of "glow in the dark" that the lights kinda make come alive) I need specifics big time in this department I know I need ample lighting so please be specific.

Anything else I need feel free (I know about test kits, salinity tests and all the regular accesories you need no need here)

Also protein skimmer no idea here either ( my cousin had one and he ran it only every once in awhile is this a good practice to follow or is it always running)

Thanks

First of all :welcome to Nanotank from a fellow Texan!

If you are planning on using a standard 10g AGA then you have numerous options. You've listed plenty of circulation so you can even go as far as converting the filter to a fuge. As for lighting that will make your coral glow, go with MH lighting. As for the skimmers I'll let others chime in on that one.

i run a AGA10 reef tank and i'm not running a skimmer. reason being i do weekly water changes(gallon only). if you keep up with water changes and maintence you shouldnt need one. HTH

I second the skimmer not needed. But if you do buy a skimmer I would avoid the fission skimmer as the skimmer is very poorly put together IMO. You get what you pay for with that one, I hear great things about the remora aqua-c HOB skimmer. Just turn off the skimmer for an hour or two when feeding.

:welcome.... Glad to have you here

IM with you guys no SKIMMER NEEDED stick with weekly water changes... and well to get the glowing effect on some corals you will need some ACTINIC PC or a strong moonlight like

And well the best option is to have a combo of MH & PC something like this

Not sure how long is you tank or you budget so the link is just an example but you can always get a kit of MH and other of double PC.. also 3-4 pc sounds good too.. well just in my opinion. HTH
