hi im new to all this fishy stuff, ive had my Live rock and sand in for a couple of weeks now, and i think ive been leaving the light on a lot but a lot of brownish color'd stuff is forming on my rocks and on the glass of my tank, and even on the sand, i have no idea what it is and what i do to get rid of it, id like my sand to start turning pink, and everything to start looking real nice, what do i need to have to do that? any response would be a great help..thanks a lot!

Hi
welcome
you are experiencing alge blooms how long do you leave your light on?
you may try shortning the light cycle. other than that the only thing you can do is to get a rock with lots of coraline alge on it but time is what will help

Definitely sounds like diatoms. You should see it go away and be replaced by green algae in a few weeks and this is all nothing to worry about. Good luck w/ your tank.

Yep, just part of the normal cycle. You can syphon some of it out if it gets really ugly. I'd just let it go. You can also reduce your photoperiod some during the initial cycle to reduce algae outbreaks.

Diatoms are fairly normal. I've never had them in any of my tanks since I leave the lights off in all of them when they're cycling.

what ever u do dont buy alot of snails or inverts to tank care of it,when it goes away u have lots of little ones to feed but no food.I hear people do that alot of the time, but they a extremely clean sandbed.
