Hello,

I am starting a nano reef tank and would like some advice on what would you guys recommend sand or gravel? What particle size? I am leaning towards the agronite sand supposable it is good for reef aquariums but the grain sizes are 2 to 3mm. Any recommendations?

any of these will work good. The grain size will depend on what you want to have in the tank. If you add something like a yellow watchman goby then you will want to keep the grain size around <1mm'ish. I wouldn't go too small because it will start to get very fine and it will what people call 'sugar' sand. Very little current can stir sugar sand and it will easily make a dust storm in your tank.

Edit: Here is what I have used in the past and it worked really well

Thank you very much for the recommendation. Is this what everyone reffers to as Live Sand or not? Will it become Live Sand with time as the aquariums establishes or will it always be just sand.

Yes this is live sand. Live sand is sand that is taken from an existing established tank (or other source). The sand is considered 'live' because it is full of bacteria and organisms that are alive. This sand can be mixed with other dry sand to help seed it into becoming live sand as well. Your sand will always be alive unless something comes along and kills all of the bacteria (next to impossible unless you add algae/bacteria remover chemicals)

On my last tank, I mixed 50% Arag-Live sand with 50% of the Carib Sand of my choosing. It helps keep the cost down and the sands will all get mixed up eventually.

Wow, thank you very much for the info. I can't believe that my local store try to sell me the live sand from their aquarium saying that I really need it, and said that the packaged stuff is no good. They wanted $4.0 per pound of live sand, I know that I only need up to 20lb for my tank but still that is no nice. I will definitely get the stuff you recommend for my aquarium.
