new to nano

Hi just hoping for some additional direction, I have been researching nano stuff for over a year and decided to register here. Also new to DSL which makes online possible. I decided to take the plunge this week and ordered a JBJ6, no mods, did follow their reef set up guide, no ceramic, no bio balls, unfortunately they sent LR to me instead of tank, so I quick set up a bucket, etc.. and made a deal to keep, the tank arrived two days later and they made a mistake and sent 5#'s more LR with rubble, sand etc. So I work PT at Petco, canine educator and we have 40% off right now so I purchased an eclipse 6G to care for the extra LR, couldn't stand to see it go to waste. Now my indoor "Garden" exp. just doubled. What to do?

I have been reading posts on site and saw a mention of extra JBJ mods and am interested in these articles. I have modest ambitions considering the premise of this undertaking. I also have good Reef help at the store, one of the Aquatics Assoc. is a whiz at this stuff. So what can I do to help my little systems survive. I have been using a great article as inspiration and timing www.aquarticles.com/articles/saltwater/ ... _Reef.html

Look forward to replys and will post some aquascapes soon.

:welcome I reall don't know much about JBJ but everyone talked me out of getting one. I guess JBJ's nano cube got me into the whole nano scene but after asking so many ?'s, buying a regular tank seemed to be the best bet. If you are handy with your hands you can try to some info by looking at http://nanotuners.nanocustoms.com/ They modify the nano cubes to be more productive as for lighting. Well, thats about all I can give. Hope everything works out.

Again welcome...and again i am not a nanocube specialists, but others wille chime in who are. That article seems good, but always cross-reference you info. dont always assume that something someone says is true. I briefly skimmed that article and I found one thing that i would change. He suggests a 1 gallon water change every two weeks. I would suggest a 1 to 2 gallon water change EVERY week. Water changes are you friend. I would only suggest you go every two weeks MAYBE if you are running a skimmer and/or refugium.

Welcome, good luck, and keep reading and being patient. BTW, I used to be an Assistant Manager at Petco and my was was a GM at Petco. Where are you located?

Though I don't consider myself a nanocube expert I do have 2 of them, a 12 DX and a 6. There are 3 main mods you will want to do/consider. First I would add a surface skimmer (this isn't necessary if you have the '06 model since it now comed with one), second you may want to upgrade the return pump to a higher flow (also been done in the '06), and lastly you may want to upgrade the lighting so you can keep higher light corals. If you contact Chris at www.nanocustoms.com he can help you with that, you can add either one more 18 watt PC or 2 more. While the canopy is off and open you may want to upgrade the cooling fans as well. Dragon79 brought up a good point recently about using ball bearing fans as opposed to sleeve bearing fans for longevity.
Remember that the fish load the 6 will handle is very small, one or two very small fish is it. I look forward to hearing where you decide to go with this project. If you can post some pics when things start coming together.

Thanks for the help Skip, I am really impressed with the two tanks, the JBJ6 is looking great, but it had the benefit of what I thought was the better rock and I placed the LS (florida from premiumaquatics and grunge/rubble) the eclipse6G just has the lessor rock but is fairing well. Will test the water later today, I know the ammonia is OK but not a specific value without test.

The JBJ6 has stuff growing already, not sure what the worms are in the rock, (fan maybe) there is a bright red tuft of something that has found a perch, and I am seeing pinks, purples, greens on the rock under some die-off(?) If water tests look OK would it be appropriate to add any reef cleaners yet? Willing to wait! Even the rubble/sand has "pinked/greened up", not sure what an algae bloom looks like is this it? also there are small stalks of peachy colored stuff looking good.

Can you tell for all my research I know nothing, I absolutely love this!

Still figuring out how to attach photo. Will do now. :?:

I would hold off on adding cleaners until I was 100% sure the cycle has completed. It looks like you are off to a good start with your tank.

I agree with jesse on water changes cause poor little fishies they need fresh air or should a say fresh saltwater cause to do water changes every 2 weeks i think is only to a really mature tank and not even so well i dont know too much on 6g nano cube so i guess dragon will be more help than me but in my experience i think to do water every week is good for the health of fishies and also i think the mods that dragon did to his 6 g are one of the best so you should read some of the post of dragon79 like the way to put things on chamber i copied dragon and mike systems on chambers with new mods but almost the same and they are working like a charm for me they help me alot with my nano.....here is mine

1st chamber 2 sponges
2nd chamber Live rock and chaeto
3rd chamber poly filter, chemi pure, heater, mini jet 606 and some LR

also surface skimmer is really a big help and a extra pump in the main tank will be better for better circulation and to prevent some dead spots and growth of some algie since i placed a extra pump my algie is undercontrol and also cause my tank is maturing of course :langle

anyways i hope i did help if not just ignore me :lol3: im used to it :lol3:

Thanks for the encouragement, so far looking good, just letting things happen, no ammonia spike and just testing the nitrates and nitrites, have access to some snails from a friend will try adding a couple in a day or two after first water change. Will mess with the aquascape a little also, I had not planned on fish in this habitat but somehow the sculptor thing in me took over and I made a nice little playpen for fish but did not allow for much else, have to think about this, so that in itself slowed my process. Will listen to the water change advice and will do mods as able. I can put that EE degree to use

thanks again and will post a pic when I retouch the scape.

PS really interested in a sexy at some point, tell me about them?

PPS tell me about photographing the tank, I have fugi-fine pix, great camera when we got it. What settings are you guys getting your great tank shots. Really impressed with all your hard work! I took shots with and without flash and found that the flash shot was better on the day but couldn't/didn't have time before that work thing got in the way, to get any in focus/close ups.

Please do TELL!!!!!!!!!! :???: wanna have :cool1: pics too!!!!!!!

I think most camaras have a macro setting...one that is designed for taking pics of objects that are closer that 12-24". THat is the setting I use with my Pentax Optio S5i. I always take my pics with the flash off. Another good idea is to upload your images to a free photo hosting site like photobucket.com. then you just copy and paste the image address to your nanotank.com post and you get larger, better quality images in your post.

HTH,
jesse

Found the macro on Fugi, no lights in tank and no flash worked well. Will try suggested site and post new aquascape later this week. Thanks.
