New Tank Syndrome

How long does new tank syndrome last? I had a diatom bloom that progressed into the red slime algae, which i tried to siphon out. However, i think the sand got disturbed and now there's diatom bloom throughout my tank, on my rocks, etc. Now my rocks have this fine coating of "gold" on them... which is what i noticed on the sand when it first started.

Here are my hypotheses for why it happened:

(1) disruption of the sand bed/diatom/red algae
(2) increase in bioload - i added two baby clownfishes

How long does this last? Should i get something to eat up the phosphates, perhaps a phosphate sponge? As long as its harmless, i think it should be okay, but i would like to know if it's a long term thing so I can make a plan of action. Much thanks as always!

How new a tank is it? Sounds odd to have fish in the tank with no cleaning crew? I'm guessing take out the fish, bump up cleaning crew, reduce light, and maybe the phosphate sponge. JMO.

A couple of hermits wouldn't hurt but shouldn't you have a couple of Nassirius (ok I can't spell) snails to stir up the substrate. I would test the water to see what is out of whack. Not sure but maybe there is too much food left over after feedings? Also flow might be a problem.

increase flow reduece lighting do a waterchange this will go away on its own as long as your water looses the high nutrient value ...
what kind of light and how long are you running
what are your tests saying
what kind of sand are you useing
when was your last H20 change
also try to siphion off as much as possible to assist in removal of it
