1 suggestion - paint the back of the tank. I prefer blue but most people use black. It will keep some of the light in the tank, and make the corals, rocks, and fish appear brighter. :)

I don't like tanks painted on three sides unless the tank is built flush in a wall, I like being able to look in from the sides so that I can see things I would otherwise miss out on. JMO, Skip

I use which ever spraypaint is the cheapest and have had no problems, I have painted about half a dozen tanks.

I am new to the forum and nice tank by the way. Did you do anything to the filtration and are you using the 50/50 bulbs?

Okay'
Well i have to agree that you should paint the back but color is a matter of opinion i have used black but you could try to fade it from blue uptop to black on the bottom.

Now for color mushrooms are a great addition, pulsing xenia would add motion and a light pink color, leathers are nice but can get big and one other addition i would make would be a green open brain coral ;-) have fun be careful and add them slowly one per week at the most.

Is there a less permanent alternative to painting the back? E.g. could you just attach a sheet of formica or other kitchen-top type material, color side inside, to the back--then you could change from black to blue or whatever depending on which you liked best? Or would this be less effective than a proper paint job?

They sell backing for fishtanks... it's just a thin plastic sheet. There are the FW versions with plants and junk, the are SW versions with fake corals, and then there is a generic one with a nice blue color on one side and black on the other side. You can just tape this to the back and works pretty much the same.
