I like the rocks with the holes in them they are cool :)
I use the "live sand " too and like it .
I noticed the heater you have be careful with them as they dont have a thermostat, to adjust temps

i really just put it in there because my room is soooo cold the temps were scaring me... it was at 69-70 and now with that its at like 73-74... and i figure the lights will affect the temp too... so depending on what happens when i setup the lights ill prolly only plug it in at night when the lights are off...

oh and the rocks with the holes: i got them because they were cured and 9.99 per rock instead of like 7$ a pound like the other LR they had... and since i weighed them and they came out to 2.5-3 lbs each i figured it was a better deal + they were cured

As long as you don't have livestock in the tank the temp really doesn't need to be stable. The bagged live sand is fine stuff, I think it's a bit on the pricey side, but I've used it in my tanks when I couldn't find the dry sugar-sized arragonite sand.

They almost look like aragocrete rocks. I was gonna ask if you'd made them.

used my 18v cordless combo set to make myself a lexan lid for the tank.. cut almost exatly around the filter (which leaves me no room to move it, but i like the placement) it fits like a glove... and a makeshift handle makes it easy to lift up and drop food down into... =0)

pics soon...

OOOH OOOOH and also: i saw my first signs of life today while rearranging the rocks a little bit to save some real estate in the back... i saw a very tiny snail, a very tiny slug (one with shell one without) and a little shrimp/plankton, or something... it was swimming around when i turned the filter off for a second...

my lights were delayed because of Rita, but should be here tomorrow and my test kit should be here in a week or so... (damn ebay takes ages) so ill just let it cycle until it gets here..

theres no harm in letting it cycle for so long without any livestock right? by the time i get my test kit to see if the levels are zero i would hope they are cuz itll be setup for about 3 weeks by then..

Nope no harm in going with out the lights some people do cycle with out lighs
we did not we had the lights on but for short periods to do scaping so we could see its all a matter of prefrence (some say that running the lights will cause diatom blooms wich is true if you run them as a cycle 12 hours on 12 hours off ) :)

so my lights came.. i got a fiji devil damsel to swim around as my only fish,,, but he seems to have perched himself inside the liferock (like literally inside a cave in one of those holes) and he wont come out... like at all.. im afraid he has died in there and i wont be able to get him out... or that hes gotten stuck and will soon die... either way itll be REALLY bad for the levels in my tank in the days to come.. unless hes just shy...

i put a little food in and still no sign of him... hopefully im wrong and hes just shy... only time will tell... how long should i not see him before i worry that hes decaying and destroying the tank?

let the lights out for the rest of today and maybe tomorrow too he needs time to aclimate to his new home chances are he is fine but you didn't mention your levels are . If he did find a cave he may be near impossible to get out . if he is alive that will be his territory , and he probably is alive

figured it was time for some new pics...

so while doing some research online i see that my fish is indeed not a fiji devil.. looks almost identical but he is a little too round... if anyone knows the true name let me know...

i guess the next step is to build some sort of stand for that light so its not sitting on my lexan hood... get a nice blue back for the tank to help reflect the light back into the tank rather than letting some out the back side.... and to hide that heater in the filter... i think it'll work fine there and it wont drive me nuts seeing it in the back anymore... or i can bury it.. but that might disturb the new fish...

not quite that much yellow on him he looks more like this one:

http://www.thatpetplace.com/LiveFish/Pr ... etail.aspx

he puts those spines up if you put your hand on the tank near where he is... its cute.. lol

oh... and about covering the back to send more light back into the tank.... mirrors are no good right? because most fish get territorial when they get older, so it might be bad... stick to the blue plastic stuff they sell at the LFS?

I dont know if mirrors would hurt I would say that it would not hurt but , others may be able to chime in and direct you on that you may try painting but we used window tint on ours
and the 2 gallon I used the plastic tinted tablecloth sold at walmart in the sewing dept for 1.88( I think) per foot . I cut it to size soaked the plastic in warm water for 5 minutes and slapped it on the back then used a squeegie to get the air out (it is kind of light tint so I painted it black after it was on
