This will be my first attempt at a marine aquarium having several fresh water aquariums currently having a 55 gal planted and a 10 gal green spotted puffer tank (been around for about a year and am currently trying to breed). the tank itself is a gift from my parents for my 21st birthday I am extremely excited, I have been doing research on marine aquariums since October of last year and think that now is a good time to start. The reason for the small aquarium is that due to lack of space in the apartment I currently have and the fact that I am looking to move within 2 to 3 years I didn’t want anything larger.

That being said I am not 100% sure what I am able to put into this tank and how to properly take care of it (hopefully all my questions will be answered by the local fish only pet store) I do know I want a clown fish and if not that something that is not afraid of being seen like a goby (hence my love for my puffers).

Coral is another thing I’m practically clueless on I know that these things just don’t magicly appear off the LR however I have no clue how to properly take care of it or chose it. I have tried but I cant seem to get my head around it even after purchasing several books on the subject.

I know a biocube out of the box isn’t going to cut it however I also need help on the proper mod-ing of it I have heard of using live rubble instead of bio balls and macro algae

I would greatly appreciate any tips or pointers to avoid a catastrophe I really want this to be a beautiful start into a growing obsession of marine aquariums I know that there will be some hiccups along the way but that’s another reason why I started this for others to learn from my mistakes.

GCK Welcome to Nanotank.com!

That is a great starter tank, I had the Aquapod 12 gallon (really similar to what you have). Most people upgrade the fans that come stock so that it will run at lower temps. Not sure about back compartment setups. As for what types of coral, a biocube right out of the box is good enough for most softies which are Mushrooms, zoas Palys. You might be able to get away with some LPS towards the top of your tank. LPS would be something like torch, hammer, duncan corals. Also you can keep a clown fish in this tank, they are great fish!! I loved mine! and a goby pistol shrimp pair would be awesome too. LMK if you have any more questions.

thank you bought and set up my tank last night (will be posting pics later) was able to get the tank heater skimmer 16lbs of live rock and GIANT bucket of salt for $480 AWSOME buy. the guy at the store said it would be ready for fish in about a week but i thought that was too soon. so after i get it cycled the next step for me will be cleaning crew and my first display invert : )

Congrats!!You are now officially on the path to addiction! :lol3: 1 week is probably way to soon, just remember that nothing fast happens in this hobby except disaster (and an empty wallet).

kk so 2-3 weeks any tricks or tips for cycling sry no pics yet on the camera but haven’t gotten them on the computer on a plus side I found some more rock that i got deal on because it was in an incorrect tank : )
I’m keeping my feelers out for fish ideas I would like a very overt and interesting behaviored fish.
I also heard of pigmy angel this week cool idea any thoughts even if I would need a bigger tank I would like to know more because I know this will by far not be my last.
Last thing I learned about would be the ability to perhaps add a hawk fish.
