Has anyone made a mod to allow moonlight LED's to run after the main lights are shut down by the timer? Seem's to me JBJ should have wired the LED circuit to "always on" rather than combining it with the main lights. (same question originally posted in general forum with no replys 8-(

You'll have to rewire your moonlights and use a power adapter to power them....3 volts is sufficient enough for the 2 LEDs. Disconnect any wire that leads to the LEDs, you'll find 2 thin white wires and 2 thick black wires. One of each of these wires are positive and negative....you'll have to trace them thoroughly as black doesnt mean its negative, dont worry, at 3 volts you wont ruin the LEDs so its fairly safe to test which wires are positive or negative. After tracing, combine the 2 positives together and the same thing with the negative.....connect these wires to your power adapter....negative to negative and so on. Radio Shack has a clearance sale going, try to find the Gamboy Power Adapter (3 Volts- 350mah)....$1.97....plus a little DIY and youre set.

Sounds like a good plan. I had hunch there was no simple fix. Do you think the value gained is worth the effort? I know there's a lot of interest now-a-days about the value of moonlight and invertebrate health. I'd be very interested in your thoughts about the value of moonlight in general. Thanks much for the reply to my post. Lastly, who did you use for a source of your surface skimmer. I can see that that is a valuable and inexpensive mod.

I really dont know what effect moonlights would do to my livestock.....what I do know is, with moonlights it makes the tank pleasing to look at at night....You could buy a moonlight mod from Nanotuners.com but it'll cost you more...$25 maybe, alot more than $1.97......you could also buy a surface skimmer for I think $15-$30....but in my case, since I do like crafting things with my hands, I just made it myself...I think its on the DIY INDEX.....I used a Sega Game Cartridge and spent 99 cents. Though for those who arent really blessed with skills in DIY's, they'd probably be better off buying a ready made surface skimmer or any ready made mods. I would rather spend my money on the critical stuff....anyway, let me check where I posted the Surface skimmer I did....its very easy to do.

I cant find it but anyway heres a picture of the surface skimmer I fashioned out from a sega game cartridge......if you could find a a sega genesis cartridge, it would be better...

Okay, I found it....look for "Modded NanoCube 12DX" in the DIY Index. Everything I did to my NanoCube is there....though there are others too you know. You dont have to do what I did...you could do better.

Great info. In fact, I do still have a very old Genesis around "somewhere". Thanks again for taking time to reply. I'll have pics to post before too long. I want to give the new inhabitants a bit of time to acclimate.

Thats good.....what I like about the genesis cartridge is that the shape is rectangular opposed to the one I'm using now which has a dip at the bottom...I tried looking for some genesis cartridges at some game shops but havent seen any so far...and i'm really not that excited to order one on ebay....if you have a black one then thats good...if not just cut it then paint it and let it dry thoroughly.
