You can either buy catalina water which cost alot! Or you can just mix your own. Everyone has their choice of salt and their opnion and why. I use "instant ocean". Why, I don't know it was just there. Just make sure you use RO/DO water and follow the directions. Then test the specific gravity to make sure it falls into range.

What I do....

I have a 5 gallon bucket with a powerhead & heater. I just fill it up with RO/DO and salt mix. Turn on the heater to the same temp as my tank and let the powerhead mix it. I wait atleast 24 hours then do a gravity check, if everything good then thumbs up!

Just remember when you do water top offs that you just use regular RO/DO water. Water evaporates NOT salt! ? So you don't always need to mix saltwater everytime. Just make sure your gravity is perfect in the main tank.

Here's my procedure.

I have a 3 gallon bucket from PetSmart. I fill it to the 3 gallon mark with cold water from my tap. *gasp* Then I kick on the power head, air line (for aeration) and heater. I watch the temp and when it gets somewhere close to my tank's temp I start adding salt. Once I get the salinity where I want it, I add in my pH buffer, detoxifying solution and any dosing. Then I let that sit for a few hours then I add it to the tank.

I'm not sure where the 24 hour method came from. I don't have time to wait 24 hours to let my water and everything mix. As long as everything is dissolved in the water then waiting 24 hours isn't going to mix it any more than it already is.

Yeah i have checked them out. http://www.lafayette.in.gov/Content/glo ... uality.pdf

I'm in an area that has pretty good water. I used tap on both of my sw tanks (20g a few years ago and this 29g) and the few fresh water tanks that i had over the years. Everything has gone great in them, actually this is the first time that I have ever seen growth in my snails' shells.

I do add Seachem Prime water conditioner. I also run 1/2 carbon and 1/2 phosguard in my HOB filter.

from Seachem's website
Prime™ removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Prime™ converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. Prime™ may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. Prime™ detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. It will also detoxify any heavy metals found in the tap water at typical concentration levels.Prime™ also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat. Prime™ is non-acidic and will not impact pH. Prime™ will not overactivate skimmers.
