Metal Halide

How far from the water should I put my Metal Halide? I'm getting a 250w for my 24g. The tank measures 24"widex13"deepx18"high. Although I'd rather have a different wattage, the 250 is what I ordered.

From what some of my friends have said, I think anywhere from 6 to 10 inches should be ok. I would try differing heights for a while until everything looks happy. All my tanks are run on PCs so sorry I couldn't be more informative.

Where are you buying the MHs from?

Altough I don't have my 15gl. setup yet, on my other tanks with MH the lights are about 8"or so from the water surface. You with have to experment to get a height that works for you.

6-10" is the general height. No lower however...too close to the water surface! It's a good idea to start at a taller height (say 12") and over a week or 2 gradually lower it to a preferred height. This will acclimate everything in the tank to the much brighter lighting. 8" is an ideal height IMO...

Salutations all! :D

I just wanted to know if anyone has ever tried fitting a double-ended MH bulb into a nano-cube hood, slapping a peice of UV glass or arcylic over it, and sticking two big ole' fans on it to blow that heat out of their...? I read somewhere on RDO that someone made a heat-sink type cooling system for his nano-cube by apoxying heatsinks to the back of his cube... he didnt even put a fan on it, and the temp went down by like 7 degrees or something!
Any comments on that hair-brained idea?... :D

Thanks for any replies in advance!

Thanks for the input, I've designed my canopy to accomodate about 7 inches from top of tank. There are also two 65w PC 50/50 lights that will run 9 hours a day, the metal halide will only run 7 hours.

The moonlights will run 24/7 just to save $10 on a timer!
