I was thinking about purchasing a pair of mandarin gobies for a 30 gallon tank but I read on marine & reef .com that they do not survive in captivity for very long it said they last 3-4 month because they do not adapt well to captivity and end up dieing of starvation has any one found this to be true :wh I wouldn't want to subject any animal to this and if it were true why would a pet shop sell them if it were true ? :fu

Well, some of it is true.

Mandarin gobies are very very picky eaters and need a very mature tank and ALOT of copepods. Most people keep only 1 mandarin goby in a 100g tank with ALOT of live rock (alot meaning at least 100 pounds for the copepods to breed). If these conditions are met, then the mandarin should live for a long time.

Pet shops will sell anything to make a profit...you should know that

Anyways, bottem line is, i do not think the mandarins will do well in a 30 gallon, unless there is a sump with LOTS of lr and lots of LR in the main tank. I am guessing the total should be at least 150 pounds....

dancefish, I have a mandarin and a scooter blenny in a 66 gallon tank. Getting a mandarin was one of the reasons why I upgraded to a 66 from a 4 gallon tank. But even with a 66 gallon tank I'm taking a risk!
