Mandarins

Hi all

Just noticed that nanotank doesnt have thread on Mandarins (correct me if i'm wrong).

Anyway, just thought it'd be good to set up a thread so any newbies could read up before buying.

In my experience, i got one that ate just about any frozen food thrown close to its face: mysis, brine, even daphnia. i only bought him after seeing them at the LFS several times cos i finally asked the guy to show me that he was eating and he swam 6inches into the water column to get at the brine shrimp!

Well, good luck to anyone who's gonna give them a try.

Cheers

Actually if you do a search for the word mandarin, you'll get tons of hits.

You're extremely lucky to have found one that'll take frozen. I'm jealous.

as am I. I'm currently trying to train the spotted mandarin to eat anything other than copepods. I been throwing in mysis and flake, no real luck there *sometimes it'll eat a flake on accident* I tried cyclopeeze, and this is true....he began eating those things one by one....and I am thinking....what the heck is in that stuff anyway? We'll just say for every 4 or 5 he scooped in his mouth, maybe 1 came out. Not bad, as long as some is actually staying in there. I will feed again with it to ensure it's not a fluke. I won't rest until I get that fish house broken to be open to eat other meaty foods.

Hi all

Congrats dragon, i'm sure since at least he's eating SOMETHING it'd be easier to wean onto frozen stuff.

Actually when i asked the LFS guy to feed him to check that he's eating i didnt believe that he'd eat and sorta just wanted to prove him wrong. Anyway, i kept him in a 12 gallon long and had to remove him into a plastic play tank (the ones with colourful neon lids) to feed cos the other fish in there wouldnt let him get any food. At first he'd only eat when i stirred the water around so the frozen would 'swim' around.

Hope that helps

You are SO right josh,
i'm so tempted that even if i cant persuade one to eat frozen, i'll culture pods for him. Gotta try, just so tempting!

Can you get cyclopeeze in AU? heard ppl get results with it.

it's official

the green spotted mandarin has completely taken to cyclopeeze. He'll go nuts and go on an eating frenzy. I'm still testing to give the little guy variety. If he takes to anything else, I'll be happier :)

Hi all. I recently bought a mandarin and I love this fish!! I have been waiting to find one that would eat other things besides copes and I finally found him. Mine will eat almost anything!!! I was amazed. He is gorgeous too. Good luck to all interested. Just keep checking with lfs to find one that will eat prepared foods!

Wow, I just returned my spotted because he wiped out the pods and wouldn't eat formula one or frozen shrimp. Next time I buy one, I'll try some of the cyclopfreeze at the lfs and see if it eats. They never get to eat anything at the lfs if you ask me.

ok, I've always heard that oyu only keep mandarins in an 80 gallon tank no less. You guys are keeping them in nanos? Wow thats great. I guess the list of nano fish keeps growing.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they need 80g. I had a pair in a 55. However they're still not recommended for nanos because of their specialized diets. IF you can find one that eats prepared/frozen foods then they're pretty much perfect for nanos, but to find one that'll do that is still very rare.

I picked up one today, that's eating live brine and frozen mysis (watched him in the shop) i'll let you know how i get on with him, he looks fairly plump already though (for straight from the store)

I have a green mandarin currently, yes it costs more to feed the little bugger than to buy a new one, and was wondering if they are compatible with gobies? I have a 24g NC with a maroon clown, purple dottyback, green mandarin, and 2 shrimp. I would really like to add one more fish to the mix, but unsure of compatibilty restraints from the dottyback and mandarin. Also my other half would like something colorful, preferably yellow, with a little personality. Thanks for any help in advance!

If you mean a clown goby then there is no problem at all, with a watchman goby the biggest problem I see is that they will be eating the same things in the same areas and may compete with each other which to me maqy be a concern with a fish that is hard enough to keep well fed. Just my .02.
