Live Rock

I am about to start a 24 gallon nano cube dx and I was curious about which online dealers have the best live rock? Also has anyone used Tampa Bay Saltwater as a source for live rock and live sand?

TBS, and liverocks.com both have nearly sterling reps.

I believe that TBS rock tends to have more life on it, but that means slightly more die-off during transit, and more negative hitchhikers like mantis shimp. I've seen several peoples new tanks after they got a large shipment of TBS, and it had lots of sponges, some stars, feather worms, etc... They all had to spend a bit of time catching mantis shrimp out before they could start adding their own critters. But since you have to wait for a tank to cycle anyway, it's much more fun to look at and catching mantis shimp gives you something to do.

Is this your first nano cube tank? I was just wondering how the quality & filtration is on them as I haven't seen people here with the 24-gallon size yet and I was thinking about buying one. Also did you purchase it online? Thanks!

I haven't bought it yet, I am still in the process of doing research on everything, because I want to do everything right.

Not too many folks have them yet, because they just recently came out. Even more recent is the 6g version. However lots of folks have had the 2 versions of the 12g, and the filtration system has pretty well proved itself.

Lots of folks mod the cubes to improve them. The most common mod is with the weak lighting system that they come with. Lots of people don't really use the filtration exactly as recommended either but either modifiy it a bit to create a refugium, or go with different media types that are more effective etc...

Thanks for the info Incysor :) Yes, I see that many people mod the lighting around here. Does it just come with the wrong spectrum for certain kinds of invertebrates or is it just not bright enough?

I have a 30 gallon and 55gallon that I could use, but this will be my first salt water tank so I don’t want to lay out a ton of money yet. I’m not sure if I should just equip the tanks I have or purchase the nanocube and then upgrade the lighting.

Maskman,
Same here, I am just researching everything that has to do with saltwater. I’ve been out of this hobby for a few years now, but previously I have kept & breed African Cichlids.

It'd probably be cheaper to equip the 30 with decent lights, and filtration than it will be to get the nanocube and upgrade the lighting.

The original Nano Cube just didn't have enough light to really keep much in the way of coral, maybe a few mushrooms, but not much else. With the cube DX, you've got enough lighting to keep mushrooms, and some softies, and LPS....Kind of like what I've got in my nano. But a lot of folks want to try stuff that is more light demanding. The 24g cube has more light still, but it's more light over a larger volume tank, so again people are starting to mod them to make it more feasible to keep some of the more light-needy critters/corals.

Ok thanks again incysor you have been a big help. I'm going to check out outfitting the 30 gallon vrs the nano. The nice thing is if I go with the 30 is that I'll have a little more room for error because of the added water. I may still try the nano since its size would be perfect for my desk.

I bought my Marshall Islands LR from premium aquatics a few years ago and was very happy with it. Just thought I'd throw that one out there.
