Live Rock Surprise!

I just started my tank today after picking up some Fiji LR from my LFS. To my surprise, I found a LARGE hitch hiker - A red star fish of some kind ... I'll have to take a picture of it so that I can post it.
I didn't want to kill the star fish so I set it up in a smaller tank with just water in it. Is there something else i should do to keep it alive? I added some Bio-support and added a lamp to heat the water, but have half the tank sheltered from the the light incase the star fish doesn't like the light.

I never wanted a start fish, so I never thought to research how to take care of one until now. Any help would be great.

I don't even know how or even what I should be feeding it.

Thx,
J :gcool

hmm... his best chance at survival is probably in the main display tank. I would take him back to your LFS first thing though. Do you have a picture yet?

My tank was just setup today - wouldn't the cycling kill the star fish?

I'm thinking that I have a "Red Serpent Starfish". It looks exactly like the picture attached.

I'd like to keep it if I can.

Starfish are sensitive to fluctuations in parameters. With the tank just being setup today, it likely will not survive the cycle. It does need to go back to the LFS. After the cycle, atleast you'll know what to go get as part of your clean up crew now!

Return it until after your cycle, it really is for the best of the starfish.

Hi Everyone,
thanks for all the advice. I'm happy to say that the Star Fish survivied the night. I took it back to my LFS and they were happy to keep it for me at No Charge until my tank has fully cycled. From what my LFS told me, it's something hard to come by in Canada and this is the first time they've seens one.

I'll keep everyone posted with with Star Fish.

Thx Again!,

That was very nice of your local fish store!

And that is a very good sign of responsible reefkeeping!
