LFS (Local Fish Store)

Can you folks recommend how one goes about finding a quality local fish store in my geographic region that sells saltwater fish?
Since my tank will be on the smaller side and I won't have the chance to purchase a lot of fish, I want to be sure that the store I buy from is competent in what they sell, with few diseased fish.
Online shipping costs begin at $19.99 for some fish which can become quickly cost prohibitive.

We are very new to reefing but have found some great info so far. Posting here is a great start! This website has proved to be the most helpful. We have heard of some great LFS's here.

One thing you may want to consider is looking for and joining a reefing club in your general area. We have found some great stores through these clubs and we even get a club discount when shopping at the sponsored stores.

What area do you live in? Sometimes the best way to find great stuff including fish and corals is to join a local club. Getting stuff from fellow reefers is usually the best way to go.

There is also a website that has a map of tons of LFS nationwide, but I dont have it saved. If I can find it, Ill link you to it.

Like it was mentioned before, try and find a local club and get their opinions on which LFS's to visit. Some of the members might actually work at a good LFS or give you pointers on which ones to visit.

just drive

the way I did it is get a list of the lfs in the area and plan a day of driving from one to the next until you find one that fits you. I did this two weekends ago and found two great lfs one for the tank and one for the tank.
for anyone in the denver area here they are D&G pets (bird and some good fish) on harmony in FT collins and animal attractions(monsterreef.com) in Greely is a great fish and reef store with great selection of fish and coral.

sorry not in your area but just get on the net and yellow page and check them out.
