hey guys--i would just like to say hello since i am a newbie at this website as well as in nano tanks

i set a 10g nao hex about a month ago. i have twenty lbs of live sand, 16lbs of live rock. i am running a canister (flu 104) with a chemipure carbon. i also have a maxi jet 600 pump for water movement.i am running a pc 36 watt light system. i currently have a tomato clown and a rock with about five green mushrooms, and 2 little yellow polyps which are all doing fine. i have three red legged and three blue legged hermits as well ass 5 snails-- i think three margaritas and two are arithus or sumthing like that-lol i do a weekly water chang of 10%
my levels are: ph-8.2 amm-0 nitrite-0 nitrate 10 calcium 405
my questions mainly are if anyone could help:

1- im curious in knowin what you guys felt about my canister running with the filter pads in it. everyone keeps telling me to remove the filter pads cause they will cause nitrate problems. what u guys think. personally i thought the filter pads are good cause they catch particles from the water but hey--u guys would know best!

2- what do u guys suggest the proper specific gravity should be--i currently have mine in between 1025-1026--- is that good? or should i bring it down?

3- what do u guys feel about feeding mushrooms and polyps? should they be filter fed sum sort of liquid or is the light enough-no feedin?

4- how many fish do u guy think i could put in this nano-i wanted 2 more such as a goby and sumthing else--is that too many? i am pushing it?

5- what will my hermitsn and snails eat once they munch on all the algae?--they pretty much have eaten all my green hair algae-now im startin to get that nice coraline algae

6--last question--sorry guys for being a pest---i noticed at night time --i get a bulid up of tiny little bubbles around my rocks and pump but by morning they are all gone--what u guys think is that cause of theses little bubbles?

well who ever can help--thanks a million for each of your advices --they will all be appreciaed and taken to account

:)

With this tank stocked and setup like you have it you shouldn't have ANY nitrates. The only thing I can think of is perhaps it's still on the tail end of your cycle. How much, and how often are you feeding the tank? Overfeeding is the only other thing that I would see causing this.

1- im curious in knowin what you guys felt about my canister running with the filter pads in it. everyone keeps telling me to remove the filter pads cause they will cause nitrate problems. what u guys think. personally i thought the filter pads are good cause they catch particles from the water but hey--u guys would know best!

I don't know anything about this model canister filter. However all sponges and/or foam will cause nitrate problems unless they're cleaned out regularly. I know some types of canister filters are harder to clean than others, so it just depends on how often you want to open it up and clean the pads. If you're REALISTICALLY only going to do it once a month or less, then you should remove them entirely. If you're less lazy than I am, and you'll do it weekly then they're probably fine. If your tank goes 3 months without stocking anything else, and your nitrates are still reading above 0, try taking them out for a couple weeks and see if it improves.

2- what do u guys suggest the proper specific gravity should be--i currently have mine in between 1025-1026--- is that good? or should i bring it down?

Reef tanks should be 1.025

3- what do u guys feel about feeding mushrooms and polyps? should they be filter fed sum sort of liquid or is the light enough-no feedin?

Most of them don't really need to be directly fed, depending on what you're feeding. However if you decide to target feed a turkey baster, or a large plastic syringe with some rigid and soft airline tubing are great for doing so. Cyclopeeze, mysis, and enriched brine are good for this.

4- how many fish do u guy think i could put in this nano-i wanted 2 more such as a goby and sumthing else--is that too many? i am pushing it?

Three in a 10g should be fine as long as they're not all large fish. How large is your tomato? They're known for being pretty agressive/territorial.

5- what will my hermitsn and snails eat once they munch on all the algae?--they pretty much have eaten all my green hair algae-now im startin to get that nice coraline algae

Detritus, algea, left over/missed food.

6--last question--sorry guys for being a pest---i noticed at night time --i get a bulid up of tiny little bubbles around my rocks and pump but by morning they are all gone--what u guys think is that cause of theses little bubbles?

Hmm, it's possible it's waste gasses from algae that's photosynthetic, or just normal air bubbles that are collecting, but being popped/disturbed as your snails go to town more actively after the lights go off. It could also be that you have some small cyano cultures there that the snails are hitting, but only after the lights are off. Unless it's a problem, it probably isn't important, and without pics it's difficult to give any sort of educated guess.

hey incysor
my tamoto clown is very small-maybe like an inch or so. as for over ffedin--i feed him daily like three pieces of flake--i make sure he eats everything!-lol

maybe ur right about my nitrate--maybe it will go away in time---imma leave my pads in and rinse tham weekly with my water changes-my fluval 104 filter is easy to open so i wont have a problem rinsing weekly

I use fastest and salifert test kits.

Salifert are generally considered the best. Although the new calcium tests read 50ppm too high, unless they've adressed the problem in the last 3-4 months.

so incysor-u think i can stick with the fastest---?
the only thing i noticed is that the nitrate on the fastest starts at 10 so how do i know if im on o nitrate?

Basically it should be a lighter shade.

Fastest are fine. I periodically take water samples with me to a LFS I trust and have them run tests as well. The reagents in the test kits can go bad over time so it's good to double check that your tests are accurate every once in awhile.
