Is my Crab going to be ok?

Hi Guys,

I picked up a Porcelain Crab today at my LFS and on the way home it lost one of its claws. Is he going to grow it back? Should I get rid of him before he dies?

Thanks,

Eric

oh snaps, what a loss for the poor little guy. I know he can molt, so maybe with frequent molts it may grow back what he lost.

In the animal kingdom crabs can lose appendages, such as legs or claws and regrow them.

In the wild they fight for territory, food and sex; during which a lot of males lose appendages.

It will take several molts before you see that claw come back; the animal kingdom is really neat.

It is a filter feeder and feeds off of plantonic foods, I use a combination of zooplankton and phytoplankton in my tank and my porcelin crab seems to be doing fine.

You can feed them once a day, it's fine. I use shrimp pellets to ensure a few drop his way so he can eat.

I feed mine once a day, sometimes I miss a day, but I see no harm. He's alive and kicking and molting regularily.

RE:

Hi Guys,

Sad news he died I had a bit of a rock slide in my tank when I was adding some coral. I guess a rock kind of crushed him to death.

I guess I will have to think of a new creature for my 2.5G. I am not to sure what to get now. Maybe bigger crab or a shrimp one that is a bit faster.
