I was thinking of taking a old hang on the back filter and making an overflow out of it by taking the impleller and motor off of it hooking the drain hose on there and starting the siphon and then using a powerhead as a return what are everyones thoughts on that Idea?

Sounds a bit like the acryllic siphon overflow. I imagine it could work if you make sure to seal the intake tube on the HOB. Matching the gravity with a powerhead might be a bit challenging though. Good luck and I would like to know if this works out for you. (My personal opinion is that it won't work. Sorry, but let that discourage you.)
