I know this is child's stuff to you all who are mechanically gifted (which I am not!). Anyway, I needed a HOB filter with a very very slow flow rate (so dwarf seahorse fry don't get sucked into Never Never Land), but all of the ones I tried were too strong for what I needed. So, I read that you can shave down the blades in the impeller of my Aqua Clear HOBs to slow down the flow. So I tried this, and it worked beautifully. Now I can use my AC HOB where I need it, with a teeny weeny slow flow rate. I am so excited. Now I can tackle any flow rate/filter problem!! :)

If I understand correctly, you can use the big AC filters (to get the filtration space you want) and just pare down the impeller blades to get the flow rate you want.... sort of mix and match. So I could have a huge HOB AC filter (with lots of room for filtration) with a slow flow rate, right?

I just may become mechanically gifted after all. :langle

i currently have all AC HOB filters, i have been playing with the options(filters/impellars)to find the best set up for my tank. unfortunitly i cant have the AC110 on for long cause it doesnt leave enough room for a HOB skimmer. i was going to trim down the blades, but i wanted to keep the impellars stock. so i could of bought the impellars seperatly, but over the few months i just bought all the HOB's instead...

Congratulations on your project. A word of warning though, DIYing can become habit forming  .
