i had an idea....

let me know what you guys think. possible? plausible? worth the work?

what if i took my HOB filter/fuge thing and drilled a hole in the intake chamber (where the water comes up into before it falls over the little wall) and hooked a tube down to a 10 gallon behind my setup.. then put a pump back up into the main chamber of my current HOB for the water to re-enter the system... sounds kind of confusing but it makes sense to me... no glass drilling just plastic and some super glue... and i can have a 10 gallon with my old 36 watt PC fixture over it to grow some macro and stuff... i can even put a egg crate shelf in there near the top and use it for a grow out area....

I don't think it will work because you would have to be able to match the flow coming from the filter drain with the flowrate from the return pump, if either of these is off you will either run the sump dry and flood the tank or overflow the sump.

well both my HOB and my curren powerhead are both adjustable... im considering attempting... the PH has way more flow than the HOB, but maybe if i turn the HOB all the way up, and the PH all the way down i can adjust from there....

need more input from the folks around here before i start drilling my HOB...

also something i thought of... if the power goes off you think that setup would cause problems? suppose i put a put a purge valve or something... idk if they make something like that...

I don't think a power outage will cause any problems but it will be all but impossible to match the flowrates in both the filter and the return pump. Like I already mention if either is off or gets off over time that will end up causing a flood.

I just thought of something that may help me prove my point. Take 2 same sized buckets and fill them to the top with water and place 2 of the same powerheads/pumps in each with a hose attatched and set them up to pump into the other pumps bucket. In theory since both pumps have the same rating they will simply pump the water between the two indefinately in a loop since they have the same flowrate but if you left them running one of the buckets would overflow and the level in the other would start dropping. If you have 2 of the same powerheads laying around give it a try and you'll see what I am talking about.

Been there....tried that....even got the T shirt......

It sounds good in theory, but just doesn't work.

I was thinking of something like that but not excatly. I was thinking of taking a old hang on the back filter and making an overflow out of it by taking the impleller and motor off of it hooking the drain hose on there and starting the siphon and then using a powerhead as a return what are everyones thoughts on that Idea?
