How to frag?

Basically...how do you do it? Anyone have writeups? I know you need to remove a coral/squishy thing from one piece of rock to another, but how are they attached? Specifically I'd need to know about zoa's and shrooms. What kind of glue to use?

squishy thing? oh dear

there are several write ups out there, try a google search. with shrooms, you'll usually see that people slice them up. with zoanthids, the most common way is to *gently* peel the mat free from the rock. or you can just bust the rock, cut away any mat that is connecting the rock pieces, and call it a day.

I said 'squishy' things as shrooms aren't corals, right? Anyway, yeah I'm a bit of a newbie to reef tanks so bear with me. I need to go get a book on corals and what not.

I thought there was more to it than that. A hammer and chisel I've got. Although the rock with the zoa's is pretty damn thick.

Can you slice up a shroom and it will grow again?

Thanks

Yes, if you can easily break a chunk rock with isolated zoas off your main colony (even with hammer & chisel) then do it. That is the healthiest and most gentle way. If that is not possible, then use the 'peel' technique that opihi mentioned. Use a sharp razor blade to cut the outline of the zoas out that you want to frag. Then just start at one corner (might need to pick at it with the razor) and peel the matt back. Its a good idea to wear safety glasses b/c zoanthids are toxic so you don't want their juices spraying into your eyes, etc. Then just use super glue gel and glue it to the rock you want it on outside the water. It's very easy. I'll post some pics of the process later.

As for shrooms, yes you can slice them right down the middle and usually you then have two mushrooms instead of one. Some respond better than others so beware.

Yeah, I saw that same thread once as well. Good link.
That link is very informative towards what I need to do with that small green ricordia. Although it said for zoo's I imagine it goes for most things right? ( in my case the ricordia)

If I remember correctly www.garf.org used to have some fairly good frag info. I wouldn't reccomend buying anything from them, their rep isn't very good on this front. I tried to find the actual page that had the fragging info, but it seems their site is down right now.
