How Much Live Rock Per Gallon

Just curious and I know that it has to be posted on the board somewhere. I bought a pound of it the other day for my 12 gallon and know that that is WAY too little for a tank my size... Is there a general rule of thumb? Like 1lb live rock for every gallon?

Thanks!

Normally the rule of thumb is 1-1.5 lbs/gallon. Just remember to leave some room as some of the coral will be attached to small pieces of LR.

it also depends on the rock, some rock is more dence than others. i am really picky when getting rock. i look for medium sized rock that doesnt weigh ten pounds, if its pretty light that means that its not as dense. i have a couple pieces that are small that weigh three to four pounds, then large pieces that weigh less than a pound.

still the general rule of thumb is the same. IMO i go with more rock per gallon.

Yeah like drty said it really depends on the rock but in my experience the more the better. I typically go with like 2-3 pounds per gallon. In my experience it seems like the more rock you have the more stable your conditions will be.

i pick rock for shape - look for holes and crevases (sp?) in which to place corals in then start with a smaller amount then you will probably end up with - start with about four or five pieces 1 - 4 lbs each and play with your scape......leave some open sand and leave some verticle height for growth if you decide on some taller corals like leathers and softies - as you buy corals it will fill in and take shape..........
