How Much Is Art Worth?

I am planing to put some photos up on ebay at what some would call an "outrageous price". So, I wanted to find out from you all your opinions on just exactly what art is worth to you?

Why am I doing this?

1 - The price is mainly due to the fact that production will be limited to only 6 copies of the photograph. No more, ever. Three of them will not be released to the public. Only two will.

2 - The photos are unique, origional and one of a kind. They will never be "captured" again.

What do you think? I guess it is mainly what you like and how much you are willing to pay for it. I don't actually plan on selling them (I mean, I don't think they will sell) but it's worth a shot right?

Thanks for the post. I will link up the auction when I get it under way so you all can see it. It is ok if you think it's "too much". That's fine. I love opinions.

I agree tho. Some people may see something the next person does not and will buy it just for that particular reason. It might also mean something. Who knows. I will post it here shortly.

I will give it a shot and see how it goes.

While I wish you luck I've got a few friends that are professional photographers and artists, and I think even as 'art' they're simply priced too high. Art is much like any other business. Until you've made a name for yourself and are well known in the art world it's unlikely that you'll be able to command the prices that you've got the auctions listed at. Even well known photographers rarely get this much for a single print, due to the reproduceable nature of the medium. If you're really looking to make some money I think you'd be better off lowering the price to $300-$500, and making a limited run of 25 available numbered/signed prints.

But you never know. You could win the equivalent of the art lottery and have someone that's influential see it and you could end up with a hell of a carreer.

I think you're more likely to sell them at a decent rate if you shopped your stuff to galleries though. Honestly, hanging your work at coffee houses and, such is generally better respected in the art community than ebay.

Either way I think you should set up a website with your work if you plan on trying to sell it. Maybe someone will see something and they like your style, but not the particular shot, and will find something else that they like better.
