What is the little hole for that is just below the water intake for the filter? I have a nano 12g, Also was wondering what the substance is that is always floating on the top of the tank after I put water in? Is there a way to get rid of it besides cutting grooves for a surface skimmer?

about the small hole???? im wondering toooo   and the oil or film that you see in your water is normal and is weird cause 12g nano comes with a surface skimmer well 2006 model anyways you can get one at your LFS for $10 or if you dont want to spend money you can doit look at this link

i used that surface skimmer that i did until my LFS got some from nanocube....HTH

yeah skimp the first link is the best skimmer but i didnt got it cause my LFS doesnt have them and i was ordering another i was like mmmm no so i kept the one that i purchase in my LFS the one in the second link and you havent used but i used it and does good skimming but the bad thing about this the cheaper is that when you turn off the filter it sinks so that sucks unlike the first like that's the best one

so HENRY HILL if you can get the one in the first link so you dont have the trouble of putting it back or lowering the skimmer like you have to do with the second link skimmer.

GREAT links skipm

You can't see it but the first skimmer has a hanger on the back of it that hangs over the back wall above the intake grate, this keeps it in place all of the time where if I am not mistaken the other one is held on by water pressure and it will fall if the pump is turned off or the power goes out.

I have ordered the cheap version for my 12...I wondered if it was just the pump pressure that held that thing up..
