I have the same heater and the documents are very vague as to the placement of the heater. It is submersible. Mine is in the tank vertically (I wanted to hide it horz. behind the Liverock pile) some heaters can not be place horz. not sure about this one. Nice heater, got mine through a pricematch at Petsmart for $16.00.
