i use a marineland deep six, cheap but does the job. it measures the specific gravity of the water, salinity of the water....how much salt is in the water.HTH

mmmm deep six is not accurate but you can give it a try but i like more the refractometers and there are some cheap ones for $50 but even better a digi lab the one that steve use measures gravity, temperature & ph all at once and is $100 a great deal....

These are referred to as Hydrometers. They are good at getting a ballpark range, however the refractometers are much more accurate. I have seen refractometers as cheap as $40.

While refractometers are the most accurate if you tip them just a bit that can skew the readings ... I spoke to a mfg about thes he said that if you are not stedy in your holding of them your reading can be off . Ed the thing that Dragon uses only measures spg and salinity only not ph

Here are a few examples of different tools used to measure salinity:
Glass hydrometer- http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/P ... 004+113761
Swing arm hydrometer- http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/P ... 004+113761 and http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/P ... 004+113761
Refractometers- http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/P ... 004+113761 and http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/P ... 004+113761
The DigiLab- http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant ... Hydrometer
Electronic Monitor- http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant ... Hydrometer
I also found this one that is an improvement on the traditional glass hydrometer that is not too expensive and said to be very accurate- http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant ... Hydrometer

As you can see there are alot of choices and these are just some of the available models. I have used all of them except the improved glass one in the last link. I currently use a DigiLab and am very satisfied with it. I recommend getting the most accurate hydrometer you can afford, it can contribute to your success or failure in keeping a reeftank.
