Flat Worms???

So I'm showing off my new mechanical filter and Incysor mentions how he used it after he erradicated his flat worms.

So I start to wonder what is a flat worm and why are they bad. Then I do a little research and find out I have them; they are those little translucent suckers I scrape off my glass every day.

I figured they are harmless, since I never see them attacking anything. But I always wondered what they were, kind of ugly little suckers just moving around the glass and near a lot of my debris on the sand bed.

I had recently purchased a really cute small 6 line wrasse and noticed that my flat worms were disappearing. I dind't think anything until I found out that they will eat them but not as efficient as the Velvet Nudibranch.

I haven't seen a big explosion of these worms since the purchase of the six line wrasse which I added just for cuteness in size.

I will monitor my tank, and see if he can keep them down. If he has a hard time, I will purchase a velvet nudibranch which is only $9.99 can't beat that and it's really pretty in color, too bad it dies when the flat worm population ends...

Can anyone give me feed back on the flat worm history???

Brian,

You saw my pics on the filter right? Did you notice a change in your animals after your cleaning? Mine opened up more, like after a rainshower...

Yeah, it seems your's is pulling quite a bit of crud out. Have you tried running it for the same amount of time without blowing off detritus first to see what the difference is? I didn't really notice any difference in the corals or critters, but mine is cycling on my main system, so figure about 125g. I mainly wanted it for the carbon, and haven't had a chance to take it back off the tanks yet. I may try your trick on the smaller tanks. The 75 has enough flow that detritus doesn't really settle on the rock much. The rest of my tanks have quite a bit lower flow though.

How great to hear of another type of pest, I hope I dont get that crap going on here? but if so I guess I'll just use that velvet nudibranch to do it's thing, and then when it dies well....it served it's purpose, hehe. Sad way to see it go, but what can you do? Harvest flatworms in a diff tank? uhhh....noOOooO!! Laterz peeps.
