A sump is like another tank, like a refugium, except it doesnt have the macro algae, you can have a skimmer in there, a heater and the other stuff.

From what i have heard, a sump is the same as a refugium except it doesnt have the life, ie, macroalgae, snails

The main benefit to a sump is it adds additional water volume which has the benefit of increasing stability to your system. It also can help you get all your equipment out of your main display tank. You can incorporate a refugium into your sump and that has great benefits. It allows a place for various planktonic creatures as well as amphipods and copepods to breed. The macroalgaes that are used in refugiums compete with nuisance algaes for nutrients and as a result, algae blooms in the main display are far less likely.

The benefits go on and on. Overall, I would say that a sump with a refugium incorporated would be THE best addition/investment you could make to you tank. On nano tanks, it is very easy to double the total volume of your system which obviously increases the stablity of your system greatly.

Hope all this helps,

Jesse
