Eheim

I'm considering using my eheim filter to run carbon and I was wondering if anyone had reccomendations of what I might want to consider putting in it in addition to carbon. It has three chambers and I'm only going to put carbon in one.

Also Jesse mentioned in a thread not to use active carbon "Pellets". why not pellets?

I mentioned avoiding the pellets only because granular activiated carbon (the one with irregularly shaped peices) has a larger surface area and is therefore more effective. Other things work into that as well such as pore size. A good quality GAC is Marineland's Black Diamond. You can get a knock-off at PetSmart and Wal-Mart too for a little bit less money.

Because you have a refugium with macro, you probably dont need a PO4 remover. Pretty much all the other chemical medias I can think of (Chemi-pure, Purigen, etc) all do a similar thing as carbon although not usually as effectlively so they are probably unnecessary as well. So I dont really know what else you would want to run with the carbon... have you considered running a phosban reactor with carbon instead of the canister filter?

You can usually find one used on one of the larger sites like rc.com and they do a good job of fluidizing the media. You can run it with pretty much any of the larger particle-sized chemical medias and it only requires a small pump like a minijet 606.

BTW. check out this link for more info than you ever wanted on GAC>>>

I hope that helps...

Thanks Jesse. I haven't ever considered running a phosban reactor for two reasons. 1. I don't really know what they do. 2. My wife is starting to harrass me for how much money I've been putting into this thing. I've seen a link on a DIY phosban reactor made out of a Gatorade bottle. would it be worth it to make one?

I wanted to use my eheim because I already have it and I just need to by the filter media. I also have 2 penguin hang on filters I could use. Would that be better?

I tried to make the gatorade bottle one and it worked well... until the pump I had took a dump! I would say try it! What do you have to lose... $1.50? LOL

I would just run the Eheim with some coarse filter pad and the carbon. The nice thing about running the Eheim is if you have it hooked up to the display it will help to add a little bit of flow... just remember to clean the mechanical media once or twice a week.

I am currently running hypersorb. In my tank top filter on my eclipse.
I'm fighting cyano so the less phosphates the better.
